The photographic work of Nikos Zafeiropoulos follows the annual cycle of the vine — from pruning to the maturation of wine — with respect, physicality, and lived intimacy.
It unfolds as a cohesive photographic narrative, a complete visual documentation of the viticultural and winemaking process, marked by the presence of manual labor, natural light, and genuine human participation.
The work moves between documentation and silence — the threshold where labor transforms into creation. The photographic gaze converses with the landscape, seeking the point where toil becomes poetry.
Natural light acts as an axis of revelation and transformation, rendering the earth a stage and the human figure a bearer of knowledge, responsibility, and creation.
The experiential stage
This long-term photographic project — a study of labor, light, and transformation — began in the winter of 2021, when the creative team undertook the care of a small organic vineyard belonging to the Sideris family in Malakasa, Attica, Greece.
The cultivation — from winter pruning to the autumn harvest — became an experience of deep observation and participation. Knowledge emerged through effort and daily contact with soil, water, and light.
The first small-scale, amateur wine production revealed the physicality and subtlety of winemaking — a humble and persistent process that shaped both the aesthetic and the conceptual foundations of the work.
The photography
From December 2023 until June 2025, Nikos Zafeiropoulos documented the complete cycle of viticulture and winemaking at Ktima Kokotou, in Stamata, Attica, Greece.
Access to the estate’s spaces and rhythms opened a field of quiet collaboration between the photographer and the people of the land.
Within their knowledge and working rhythm, the lens stood discreetly beside them — a coexistence that revealed trust, precision, and the subtle dignity of human practice.
The exhibition
The exhibition AMPELOS approaches the truth of labor, nature, and art through the cyclical life of the vine. Fatigue, light, and time form the foundations of this experience, expressed as a continuous movement of creation and transformation.
Will be presented at the City of Athens Arts Center ( 13-31 January, 2027), a site where nature and the city coexist, the exhibition distances the viewer from the urban noise, inviting them to follow the rhythm of the earth, to observe the process, and to reflect upon the relationship between matter, time, and human presence.
